Also, at- tending a public college in your home state usually costs much less than attending a public college in a different state. u Start at a community college – Going to a community college for one year usually costs less than half of what it costs to go to a four-year college for a year. Students who want to earn a bachelor’s degree can save money by starting at a community college and then transferring to a four-year college. u Live at home and commute – Students can save a lot of money by living at home and commuting to a local college. u Spend less time in college – Students can shorten the time they spend in college by taking AP and dual credit courses in high school, and by taking heavier loads and going to summer school while in college. u Take advantage of tax credit and savings programs – The American Opportunity Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit, and 529 Plans are programs designed to help taxpayers reduce college costs. u Use money earned through an internship or co-op program Co-op students often earn enough when they work to cover their college expenses. When they graduate, they not only have a degree, they also have valuable work experience. u Take advantage of military education programs – The military has a number of programs to help students pay for college.
